A seaside tamarisk hedge cut level along the edge of a clover lawn, with the sea and a cloudy sky beyond

The problem

A seaside garden out near Worth had a tamarisk hedge the length of the lawn. After a summer of growth it was feathery, tall and a bit wild, with the top ragged and the sides spreading out onto the grass.

Tamarisk is a tough plant that loves a windy seaside spot, and it grows fast because of it. It needs a regular cut, not a rescue.

What we did

Two lads and a dad, a long-reach trimmer and a decent rake. We worked from one end to the other, setting a level top and cutting the sides back to a straight line. Tamarisk does not like being cut into bare old wood, so we stayed in the green and kept the soft finish.

A long hedge like this produces a lot of clippings. We bagged them as we went and raked the lawn clean at the end, so there was nothing left to do but enjoy the view.

The result

Level, tidy and the view is back. It will stay that way with a light trim once a year.

Looking after it

A bit of kit talk, because people ask. For long hedges like this we use a long-reach trimmer so we can hold the top level without a ladder, then finish the sides by hand. It is quicker, safer and gives a better line. We are a family business, two lads and a dad, and we take pride in leaving the place cleaner than we found it.
